Karnataka’s Decade-Old Semiconductor Policy Continues to Pay Off as Investment Pours In

The state, which introduced India's first dedicated semiconductor policy in 2010, now hosts over 100 fabless chip design houses.

Karnataka’s semiconductor policy, introduced in 2010 as the first of its kind in India, continues to shape the state’s standing as a hub for chip design and research. The state is now home to more than 100 fabless chip design firms and over 400 multinational R&D centres, according to industry figures.

Recent investment announcements, including a ₹3,425 crore commitment from Zoho-backed Silectric Semiconductor and a potential $2 billion R&D facility from Applied Materials in Bengaluru, suggest the policy’s early bet on semiconductors is continuing to attract fresh capital more than a decade later.
